A manual wheelchair is a mobility device with large rear wheels that allow the user to self-propel by gripping and rotating the hand rims. Most models also include handles at the back so a caregiver can push when needed. Manual wheelchairs are ideal for individuals with adequate upper body strength who want independent mobility at home and outdoors.

Manual wheelchairs work best for individuals who can self-propel without excessive effort, or who have a caregiver available to assist. If fatigue or weakness makes self-propulsion difficult, a power chair may be a better option. Terrain, turning radius, and daily usage patterns are all important factors when choosing a manual model.

Transport chairs, sometimes called companion chairs, have four small wheels rather than two large rear wheels. Because the wheels cannot be reached by the seated user, transport chairs are designed to be pushed entirely by a caregiver. They are lighter, narrower, and fold more compactly than standard wheelchairs, making them ideal for trips, appointments, and situations where portability is the priority.

A transport chair is a good fit when the user will always have a caregiver available to assist, primarily needs mobility help for shorter outings like appointments or errands, and values a lightweight and easily foldable design for vehicle transport. For those who need independence at home or spend extended time in their chair, a manual wheelchair is typically the better choice.

Geriatric chairs, also called Geri Chairs, are padded reclining chairs on a wheeled base designed to support seniors with limited mobility. They are larger and more cushioned than transport chairs, offering a comfortable place to rest, eat, or be repositioned. Most models recline into multiple positions and many include an attachable tray for eating, reading, or other activities.

Geriatric chairs are commonly used in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and at home for seniors recovering from surgery or those who have difficulty maintaining a seated position. While primarily used in professional care settings, they are frequently purchased for home use as well.
